Deforestation is the second leading cause of global warming. It produces 24 percent of global greenhouse emissions. Deforestation is the chopping down of trees, plants, and forest environments. This is done for wood and to make homes, as well as for space to build. How does deforestation cause climate change? Plants emit carbon dioxide and the extra carbon is stored in the plant to help it to grow. When trees are cut down and or burned, their storied carbon is released as carbon dioxide, which as we know, contributes to climate change. We need to protect tropical forests and plant more trees if we want to prevent the world’s issues with global warming from getting worse. Deforestation happens at an alarming rate, about one acre of tropical forest per second. This is clearly an issue, and without addressing this, we cannot deal with the issue of global warming completely. Not to mention, working on the issue of global warming saves lives. Tropical forests provide oxygen for us to breathe, and can take harmful greenhouse gas out of the atmosphere. It is cost effective to stop deforestation. Increased forest protection measures and countries pledging to cut emissions can make a huge difference. What can you do? Spread the word, plant some trees! Protect your local forests and sign campaigns and pledges.
